Forest loss, and why.
Open Forest Watch is a forest monitoring system that finds forest loss across the tropical belt and attributes its cause, for the EU deforestation regulation. Access is by invitation.
A cleared hectare has to be explained.
The EU deforestation regulation asks companies to show that what they import was not grown on recently cleared forest. An alert that trees are gone is not enough. Buyers need to know what removed them.
What it reads.
- Sentinel-2
- Optical images from ESA Copernicus at 10 metres.
- GLAD and RADD alerts
- The open forest loss alerts from optical and radar satellites.
How it works.
- Detect
- Loss is found where Sentinel-2 imagery and the GLAD and RADD alerts agree.
- Attribute
- Each loss gets a likely cause and a hypothesis about who cleared it, so a cleared plot can be told apart from fire or natural change.
- Report
- The result is shaped for a due diligence file under the regulation.
Being reworked. Open to invited users.
Open Forest Watch runs at ofw.northflow.no for invited users while the service is reworked. It is built around what the EU deforestation regulation asks an importer to show.
Papers, code and data.
Who it serves.
Companies and organisations that need forest evidence for the EU deforestation regulation can ask for an invitation.
